front cylinder on the passenger side The #1 bank on any V type engine can easily be identified, no matter who the manufacturer is. Valve covers are not directly in line across from one another on a V type engine. Try to look straight down on top of the engine. You will notice one valve cover is actually positioned slightly ahead, toward the front of the engine. That is the #1 bank. Almost always Ford puts their #1 bank on the passenger's side of the vehicle. Remember Ford numbers their cylinders different than a GM product The #1 bank will have cyl numbers 1-4 up that side and the # 2 bank will have cyl numbers 5-8 up that side. GM puts theirs criss-cross, 1,3,5,7 up one side and #'s 2,4,6,8 up the other.
