It is designed on computers using CAD(computer
aided design) programs and tested in the virtual world before models/proto-
types are cast based on the auto manufacturers needs. The engines put through
tests( emission, dyno,
endurance) before going into production. Normally takes couple years before they are up for sale.
The first car was on diesel.
The Benz Patent Motor Car was the name of the first motor car. The engine of the car was developed by one Carl Benz.

This innovative engine design, developed by engineer Leland, provided greater power and smoothness compared to the inline engines of the time. The Cadillac Model 30 helped establish the V8 as a popular engine configuration in the automotive industry.

in 1860, Belgian Jean Joseph Etienne Lenior developed a gas powered engine that worked similar to a steam engine but with gasoline instead of steam. this was the first engine that was produced in large numbers
The engine can be in the front or the back of the car.
