Plastic is dangerous for organisms in the environment due to its nearly indestructable properties. Most plastic can also be seen as food for certain bird, seal or whale species. These organisms can ingest plastic or get entangled, suffocate or die of starvation due to the persistency and at the same time flexibility of the material.

Another thing is that most plastics contain additives which give the plastic a certain property, like increased resistance agains UV - radiation (one of the few things which can degrade plastics), flameretardants, plasticizers or fillers. These additives are added to the material and can be very toxic when leached to the environment. Some addatives are believed to be able to cause cancer.

Plastic is a hazard to the environment because it requires petroleum to produce. It stays in the ground for hundreds, if not thousands of years. It harms wildlife on land and in the oceans. Fish have been found with plastic in their stomachs. Animals have choked on plastic pop can rings around their necks. There are masses of it from all coastal countries that float on the surface of the oceans. It washes onshore and destroys the beauty of beaches.
