An exhaust system is basically a pipe. What the engine blows into the pipe at one end gets ejected into the atmosphere at the other. There's a muffler in there somewhere, which is basically a bucket with some baffles in it. The muffler will trap some of the sound which makes the engine run quieter. These days it's also a catalytic converter there. It's another bucket that looks like it's been filled with layers of cardboard, with all their small channels aligned lengthwise. As the exhaust fumes travel through these channels they react chemically with a liner in the catalytic converter and gets turned into something slightly less nasty.
