Lennon started his career in a band called The Quarrymen. This was established in September 1956. Along with McCartney, Harrison and Sutcliffe he then went on to form 'The Beatles', and played in Hamburg after adding their drummer, Pete Best. This was in 1960. They then went on to play in Hamburg another two times, in 1961 and 1962. Ringo Starr then replaced Pete Best and McCartney replaced Sutcliffe as bassist. Their first single, 'Love Me Do', was released in 1962 and made it to #17 in the charts.

If you want any further information on the early life of John Lennon up to the formation of The Beatles, watch 'Nowhere Boy'. It's quite an accurate representation of his childhood.
