The majority of world banknotes are made from cotton paper (paper made from cotton rather than wood).

The emerging technology of 'polymer' (plastic) notes started in Australia. Polymer banknote substrate is now being used by 24 countries on 79 denominations.

The actual production process varies slightly from country to country, but in essence it is;

1) A Dry Offset process prints high-quality colour patterns on both sides of large sheets of cotton paper (paper made from cotton pulp instead of wood pulp). This forms the background to the next process.

2) An Intaglio press uses inked metal plates which have additional design features. These plates are applied using heavy pressure, transferring the ink and adding a lightly raised surface, adding a tactile element to the process.

3) The large sheets are checked by hand for printing inconsistencies. All passed sheets are then passed through a Letterpress printing process which applies unique serial numbers to each of the notes on the sheet.

4) A stack of sheets is sliced in an hydraulic guillotine into individual notes.

1. The transparent plastic polymers are laminated into large clear sheets.

2. Two layers of ink are applied to each side of the sheets to make them opaque - usually with a small area left deliberately clear for the tell-tale security panel.

3. The large sheets are cut into smaller ones suitable for the printing presses.

4. Traditional offset and intaglio processes are used to print the banknote design.

5. The notes are coated with a protective varnish.

6. A stack of the large sheets are guillotined into individual notes.

Why do you have polypropylene plastic for bank notes?

Plastic banknotes have several advantages over paper banknotes. - They are much more resilient than paper notes, being very difficult to rip or tear. - They are waterproof. - They are much more difficult to forge. The polymer polypropylene, or to be more accurate biaxially oriented polypropylene, is chosen for use in the manufacture of plastic banknotes both because of polypropylenes resistance to most types of solvents and glues and because of it's resilience.
