They did not have to do anything for them, knights protected their serfs more cause of the profit not because he care of the serf's life.
Serfs worked on the lands of the Lords and most the produce belonged to the Lords. Tenant farmers, on the other hand, work on the lands of the Lords but keep all the produce, and just pay rent.
Serfs were the lord's slaves
Well, sometimes, especially to be a noble because to be a knight, the horses and armor was expensive, and most serfs lacked skill, but some serfs did become knights. Nobles... Well, even if you had lots of money in that time period, you couldn't always be a noble. Nobles were from rich families and they had almost always had been rich, especially very rich nobles, but they could sometimes get high jobs, with the money, probably, and be a noble. It separated people into different social classes(Peasents/serfs, Kings/Queens, Lords/Archbishops, Knights) and they could tax different amounts to different people.
