Carolina got its name from the French, in 1563 or 1564, in recognition of Charles IX, who was the then current King of France. Geographically there is not an extensive difference between the two states but South Carolina has a warmer average climate. The most notable cities in each are the very artistic Asheville for North Carolina and Charleston which represents South Carolina by providing ground breaking medical services to the region. One notable difference is in the area of higher education. North Carolina has higher marks for academic performance, while South Carolina has a solid reputation for strong athletic performance, including the USC Gamecocks whose history of participation in many bowl games is steeped in tradition and deeply rooted in various SEC rivalries.

North Carolina actually has the better athletic record as well, with several teams winning national titles in many sports. UNC has won five NCAA men's Basketball titles, Duke has won four, and NC State has won two. Duke has won titles in men's soccer and lacrosse, and UNC has won many titles in women's soccer. South Carolina was a founding member of the ACC, and today is a member of the SEC. Clemson still is an ACC school, and is a constant threat each year to win the league title in football. Together, Clemson and South Carolina have won eight national NCAA titles, South Carolina in baseball 2010-2011, and women's Track and Field. Clemson won the national NCAA football title in 1981. Also, they have won the soccer title twice, and the golf title once. To sum, the North Carolina schools have a much better record in all sports except football. One example is the UNC women's soccer team, which has won 22 titles.

Eastern North Carolina barbecue is whole hog chopped and served with a thin sauce made of vinegar and spices. Western North Carolina barbecue is made from only the pork shoulder served with vinegar and tomato sauce.

Western South Carolina has a peppery or ketchup sauce. Central South Carolina uses a mixture of yellow mustard, vinegar, brown sugar and other spices. The PeeDee region uses the whole hog with a vinegar-and-pepper sauce.
