P-waves are known as primary waves as they have the highest verlocity of any seismic waves and so are the first to be recorded by a seismometer and they are longitudinal or compression waves.
S-waves are known as secondary waves having a lower velocity than the P-wave and so arriving at a seismometer station after the P-waves. S-waves are transverse or shear waves.
