The Tudors were started by Owen Tudor after he married Henry V's widow Catherine of Valois sometime in the 1420's, offsping to this pairing were kept hidden from the Yorkist successors to Henry VI ( Henry V's son who went insane in adulthood ) following Owen Tudors ( a firm supporter of Henry VI ) battle loss at Mortimer's Cross in Herefordshire. Henry VII eventually overthrew the Yorkist claimernts in 1485 and thus was the first Tudor King. HenryVIII was the last Tudor King, he was eventually succeeded by Elizabeth I who died in 1603 thus ending the Tudor dynasty, the Tudors were succeeded by the Stuarts who can also be traced back to Owen Tudor. The Windsors took the name Windsor after public disgruntlement during WW1 with the ruling family's "too German sounding" surname of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha ( Queen Victoria's husband Albert's family name ), prior to that the Royals had never really worried about using a surname, to this day Queen ElizabethII signs her decrees Elizabeth R , the R being for Regina which just means "Queen"
