At the opening of Book 22 of the Iliad, the poet compares the gleam of Achilles' armour as he comes into King Priam's view with the star Sirius. He identifies the star as a signal of pestilence, but also a beacon of the harvest. Previous to this, Achilles had entered the plain in the company of the gods Hephaestus and Boreas, both sent by Hera to subdue the god-river Xanthus-Scamander and to enable Achilles' crossing. The poet compares the scorching effects of these gods to mid-summer period, which the Romans later called the "days of the little dog" or the forty day period when Sirius shone above the pre-dawn horizon.

Iliadic Achilles in this way takes on the role of a personification of the Dog Star. His burning wrath comes to a completion with the death of Hector, something that makes the 'harvest" of Troy possible for his fellow Achaeans. However, the death of Hector, itself described with reference to astral symbolism, brings with it the hero's own death, which is revealed to Achilles by Hector at the moment of his death. The Iliad itself spans a forty day period from its beginning with the arrival of the Apollo priest Chryse to its ending with the Trojan burial of Hector. Achilles is in the Iliad a mythic personification of the star Sirius.

How are Sirius and Betelgeuse alike?

Sirius and Betelgeuse are two of the brightest stars in the night sky, with Sirius being the brightest and Betelgeuse being the 9th brightest. Betelgeuse is in the wonderful constellation of Orion. Sirius is in the nearby constellation of Canis Major. They are very easy to spot, with Betelgeuse being at the top left of Orion and Sirius, being below and to the left of Orion, with Orion's Belt acting as a good way of pointing towards it. Comparing the two it is also easy to notice the difference in colour as Betelgeuse is a red supergiant and looks reddish in colour, very different to Sirius.

Where is Sirius b located in the night sky?

Sirius, which consists of both Sirius A and Sirius B is in the constellation Canis Major, which, if you are looking south, appears below and to the left of Orion. Sirius B itself is too dim to be seen from Earth; the vast majority of the light from Sirius is from Sirius A. Even then, as a binary system, the two stars are too close together for us to see them separately.

What is the apperant magnitude of Sirius?

Sirius is actually a binary star system. Sirius A has an apparent magnitude of -1.46 whereas Sirius B has an apparent magnitude of 8.3
