Most badges are sewn on, but some may be the iron on type. There are also products that are a type of glue that may be used to attach the badges.
Regarding where to place the badges, it depends on which organization the Girl Guide belongs to.
Girl Guides Canada say that the girl's program books should have an illustration for placement of the badges on the sash. They also have photos of the sashes at their online store.
The troop leader/guider should be able to tell you where the badges go.
For Girl Scouts of the USA, the Girl Scout Brownie badges go on the front of the sash, near the bottom. If you run out of room on the front of the sash, the badges may go on the back of the sash. For GirlGuiding (UK) there is no specific position for the Brownie Interest badges on the sash. However, Brownies and their leaders may decide where to place the badges on the sash.

Girl Scout Fun Patches (unearned patches, usually purchased as a souvenir of an event or troop activity) go on the back of the sash or vest. Some Girl Scouts put them on a Patch blanket. Girl Scouts of the USA earned Awards and Official Insignia go on the front of the sash or vest and there are specific places for them. Girl Guides of the UK are pretty much allowed to places the badges where ever they want with the exception of a few specific places for some insignia.
According to information about the Girl Guides of Canada sash, there should be suggestions for insignia placement in the girl's program book. Only program badges are to be worn on the sash. The Unit Title Tape goes on the top, in front. Next, the Enrollment Pin. Then the Membership Pin. Then the Challenge Crest. And then the Keepers (the pink oval badges), in no particular order. The Girl Guides of Canada Facebook page also has photos of badge placement.
For Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), the earned badges go on the front of the vest, underneath any other earned insignia. It is a good idea to start attaching the badges at the bottom of the vest. Any fun patches received go on the back of the vest. Other Girl Guide and Girl Scout organizations may have different guidelines for badge placement.
The Early Bird patch is not an official Girl Scout insignia, so it should be placed on the back of the Girl Scout sash or vest.
You should get a copy of the badge requirements for your particular Girl Guide organization and then decide which badge you would like to earn. Read through and follow the requirements. Be sure you meet with your Guider/Leader so that they know you are working on a badge.
