Eggs get fertilized by the cockerel. Sorry, you don't get to choose what gender comes from the fertile egg, neither does the rooster nor the hen.

What is a fertilized chicken egg?

A fertilized chicken egg is an egg that has the ability to be hatched. Normal store eggs can't be but eggs from a farmer usually can be. The fertilized part just means the hen was around a rooster and he inseminated her. So now there is a sperm in the chicken egg. Hence the fertilized part.

Does a chicken egg have to be fertilized by a male chicken to make a chick?

They lay eggs daily, but if you want chicks you have to have a male to fertilize the eggs.

Can a hen lay eggs without mating?

Yes Pullets will start laying at about 5 months old. A rooster does not need to be involved at all. Eggs are produced without the help of a rooster. All the rooster does is fertilize the eggs and guard the flock. The chickens who produce the eggs you buy at the big supermarkets and grocery stores with live out their productive years without ever seeing a rooster. Yes Hens will lay without mating with a cockrel they will start to lay at about 5 months old. If a hen did lay after mating that egg may be fertile as that is all the Cockrel does. Do hens have to mate to lay eggs?

No. You do not need a Rooster ( no such thing as a male chicken) to get a chicken to lay eggs. Eggs are produced based on daylight paterns. The rooseter is only needed if you want to fertilize the eggs.

Have all eggs laid by a hen been fertilized and some just not produced a chick?

Only hens that have a rooster amongst the flock will have been fertilized. Store bought eggs are not fertilized as the mass produced egg suppliers do not allow roosters near the hens. Usually only small farms will sell eggs that may have been fertilized.

Are eggs and meat in the same food group?

No, it is a protein. It can be considered a meat. But because the eggs are not fertilized, the egg will never produce a real chicken or bird. Technically it is just a protein but people refer to it as a meat.

How does a chicken know to sit on her fertilized egg and not just lay the egg and leave the coop?

Just like a human, the Hen will have maternal instinct. In other words, it is in her blood and DNA to know what to do. Some Hens do not get attachments to their eggs at all and will just leave but it is very rare.

A chicken is hatched in an?

A chicken can be hatched from under the mother hen after 21 days of sitting on them, as long as the eggs are turned for the first 18 days, twice a day (morning and night). But, I think you are referring to an incubator, where you put fertilized eggs at a certain temperature, and turn them just as a mother hen would do. I have put a lot of eggs in my incubator, and most of them hatched, so you've got a good chance to hatching most eggs.
