Gamete is the term that refers to the individual haploid sex cells, the egg or the sperm, and contains only half of the necessary genetic information for a new organism. A zygote is the diploid result of fertilization between an egg and sperm, which will ultimately grow into the organism.

Since different species have a different number of chromosomes in the somatic cells (non gamete cells) then to generalise it's said that gamete have n chromosomes and zygotes and somatic cells have 2n, meaning double the number.

For instance, humans have 46 chromosomes in the somatic cells. To avoid confusion, it's better to say we have 23 pairs, since they're complementary, 23 coming from the mother and the other 23 coming from the father. They're not exact copies, since there are also always a few mutations in the mix, but that's irrelevant to the number of chromosomes in an ordinary zygote. 23 from one, 23 from the other: 23 pairs.

How does the chromosome content of a parent cell compare with that of a gamete?

The gamete will have 50% of the genetic material of the parent. This is then fused with the other parent's 50% to give the offspring the whole 100%.

If a human gamete with an extra chromosome participates in fertilization with a normal gamete what conditions result?

It depends on what's missing. Zygotes missing a chromosome (monosomy) have 45 chromosomes and many do survive; some human monosomies are monosomy 7, 11 or 13. A monosomy X results in Turner syndrome; there must be at least one X chromosome, or the embryo won't survive.

Why do gamete contain less chromosome than parent cells?

The gamete is supposed to join with another gamete, and combine their chromosomes into a single cell.

What is the chromosome number of gamete?

They have half the number of the somatic (parent) cell. So if a parent cell had 46 chromosomes in its nucleus, then its gamete would have 23(one chromosome from each pair).

What effect does nondisjunction have on the chromosome number of the gametes?

It gives one of the gametes an extra chromosome and leaves the other gamete with one less chromosome.

How many chromosomes does a male gametes have?

It is different for different species but in Humans, each sperm (male gamete) has 23 chromosomes out of which 22 are autosomes and 1 is a sex chromosome.
