∙ 14y agoan web server computer requires special programs and services (like apache for example) that can be run on a home computer.
however, web servers are most commonly special computers that are set aside for being a web server and not used for anything else.
even though you can set up your home computer to be a web server,
it can be very costly, complicated, and if you want to have more than 25-50 users on your website (depending on how fast your computer is) then forget it!
it also is a major suck on bandwidth and could make your internet slower than quarter-speed dialup! (10k per second)
that would make loading Google.com seem like downloading a 50mb file!
HOWEVER.
if you intend to just make your computer a web server for people on your network,
you can use apache(open source - works on any operating system but slightly complicated) or IIS 4.0 (windows only),
and then set the website address to "websitenamegoeshere(WITHOUT ANY DOT COM):80".
then anyone can go to it by typing in "http://websitenamegoeshere" as long as they are plugged into your network!
