The idea behind Karma is that you get what you receive. This means that if you do something good for somebody else, something good will happen to you in return, and the same for if you do something bad. The idea is to encourage people into doing many good deeds.

Karma is important to all people, because karma is a person's actions, not the response to an action, as most people think. The word Karma means action or deed. A persons actions (karma) affects others, sometimes in a good way and sometimes in a bad way. The results of a persons action is called the karmic fruit (that is the result of the action).

Therefore when someone says "that's my karma" when something happens to them, it is really an error. But, If they typically yell at people when something goes wrong for them, the yelling is their Karma (Their typical reaction) not the fact that something went wrong for them.

So Karma is within all people. Whether you believe that a person's karma affects their fate is a whole other question.

The philosophy of Karma has importance in Hinduism since Hinduism believes in Spirituality and God.

Since they believe in the theory of incarnatiomn and rebirth, they are taught to believe that every action has a bearing and one should act without the expectation of result or reward, because they shall be paid for that in their next birth, if not in the present one.

According to Shri Krishna Ji in Shrimad Bhagvad Geeta, every person should do his Karmas with full purity & without any greed.. Karmas are basically the responsibilities of a person..

Hats Off to Such Culture....

Answer 2:

Bhagavan in Gita says that karma is the best and that the basic karma cannot be renounced like breathing, walking, etc. Mind cannot be left idle, hence it should be engaged to do some work. But it is the attachment with it's fruits that causes bondage. Hence bhagavan in Gita says that karma has to be done with the spirit of detachment.

Since Jnana Yog is difficult and only for pure heart, hence one can purify oneself by doing nishkaama karma i.e. doing actions without expecting some fruits. This purifies the mind thereby making it qualified for bhakti or jnana, depending upon prakruti.

Not all want moksha and hence doing good work and performing rites and rituals are considered very important. Service to poor is considered as service to God. Even Shri Krishna said that Karma is the best (that suits you). Krishna and Rama were living e.g. of a karma Yogi.

it is not freedom from action, it is freedom in action. One should act and not react. Attachment has to be broken and not the object of attachment.

IMPORTANCE OF KARMA IN HINDUISM:

The importance of Karma in Hinduism can only be understood through Brahmajnana, the supreme Hindu knowledge.

It would be obvious that the Brahmajnana concept of Karma is directly compatible with science.

1. REINCARNATION - ACCORDING TO BRAHMAJNANA:

According to Brahmajnana, Reincarnation means transformation of an activity every time it is repeated.

Since Brahmajnana is absolute fact, according to it there is no rebirth.

2. KARMA - ACCORDING TO BRAHMAJNANA:

Every activity needs a force that facilitates it and another force that abolishes it when it is over. For maximum efficiency the two forces must never co exist.

According to Brahmajnana, Karma means co existence of forces that facilitate/ retard what we are doing and their constant fluctuation.

This would make activities and rest inefficient and unpredictable.

3. MOKSHA - ACCORDING TO BRAHMAJNANA:

According to Brahmajnana, Moksha means separation facilitating and retarding forces and abolition of their fluctuations.

The separated facilitating force is Saguna Brahman and separated retarding force, Nirguna Brahman.

Thus, Karma leads to Moksha and Moksha, to Brahman. Brahman makes us master of our fate and enables us to lead a stress free, predictable and controllable life.

Thus, since Hinduism has no code of conduct, Karma is our only guide to perfect life.

What role does karma play in Buddhism?

Karma in Buddhism is slightly different than most people think.Karma is not the result that you get from an action (what goes around, comes around) as most people think. Karma is your action / reaction to a situation. When speaking about your Karma, we are speaking about the typical reactions you have to the same stimulus (like getting angry when someone tell you something you didn't want to hear). The results of your karma (actions) is called the karmic fruit. That's what the "what goes around, comes around" is.
