On a period on the Periodic Table, each element increases by Atomic Mass and by atomic number when read from left to right. It is 'periodic' as in 'appearing at regular intervals' in that elements in a vertical column tend to have similar properties. For example, Fluorine and Chlorine and Bromine appear in the same column and each forms salts with the same metals in the same atomic ratios. Mendeleev was able to predict the existence of some previously unknown elements because of this property of his table.

The no of period of periodic table tells the no of shells in atoms, so their atomic sizes and other physical properties may be imagined.
