Lincoln's reputation remains as the most talented and capable leader the American people ever had. And he was from a poor background, from which he moved up through his enthusiasm for law and politics.

Davis was an old-style Southern aristocrat and ex-army officer, who looked the part as a symbolic Confederate, but who proved to be way out of his depth at trying to lead either his Generals or the civilian public. As President, he was an utter failure.
