The Italians are very hot on public transport. When I went to Italy on an exchange with a school there, we took the bus. I would imagine that bus is the most popular...I didn't see much evidence of trains and in the current economic climate, either it is too expensive to take the children to school by car, or both parents are working in the mornings (like my exchange's were). Their culture is not too obscure from yours (assuming you're American) and mine, so there will be people who take the bus, and people who take the train, and people who's parents take them.
