There are two different grading systems that determine condition of a Firearm. One is the NRA Standard method of Catagories. Guns should fit into one of the following descriptions: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, Excellent, New The other method is a percentage system. In this system, the gun is graded on how much originial finish is still remaining. Both wood and metal are inspected to account for wear, flaking, patina, marring, scratches, dents and so on. It takes experience and a trained eye to correctly grade a gun. Naturally, the higher the percentage that a gun is rated, the higher the price will be when it comes time to buy or sell. The Novice needs to beware when using this system. Some guns can change drastically in value on one or two percentage points. An appraisal from a Reputable Dealer is always recommended. The Blue Book of Gun Values has a complete breakdown of grading guns available free on line. Use the link below for a good tutorial of the subject.
