The political divisions of a continent are countries.
Political divisions of a country are states, or provinces (territories in Australia)
Political divisions of a state are counties, or parishes.
Political divisions of a county are cities, town, townships, & boroughs.
ISLANDS
Continents are politically divided as well as geographically divided.
A continent is defined as one continuous landmass, and since an island is not connected, it is not physically a part of a continent. However, an island (if it is a country or a territory, etc.) can politically be a part of a continent. For example, Cuba is not physically a part of North America, but politically, it is.
Jamaica is an island nation in the Caribbean, and is therefore not physically a part of any continent. However, the country is politically a part of North America.
Hawaii is an American state, politically a part of North America. However, it is physically located in Australia & Oceania.
Hawaii is in the Pacific Ocean and is not a part of any continent physically, but it is a part of Oceania & Australia and politically a part of North America; Hawaii is occupied by the United States of America.

Physically or politically
Europe and Asia are not geographically continents, only politically. Europe and Asia are physically attached to each other and form the larger continent of Eurasia, which geographically is a continent and not politically one. Which means Eurasia has continental drift since it is a continent, while Europe and Asia are not (geographically speaking).
Romania is divided in județe (counties).
West Virginia
Great Britain (GB) is an island that is politically a part of the continent of Europe.
South America is not divided by any continent. It is a continent itself.
