ML 430 cylinder diagram
On inline engines such as the Mercedes 5 cylinder engine, the number one cylinder is at the front of the engine (where the pulleys and belts are), and the cylinders are then numbered sequentially toward the rear of the engine, i.e. 1 2 3 4 5. The number 5 cylinder on your MB 2.4 liter 5 cylinder would be the one at the engine's rear.

what is the over all torque for a Mercedes 300e 1991
It is the middle cylinder on the passenger side. With few exceptions the number one cylinder is the farthest one forward. If you look closely on your 4.3 you'll see that the driver side (left) cylinder bank is slightly forward compared to the right bank. On a Chevy they are numbered back and forth from left to right. So, the left bank is numbered 1,3,5 and the right bank is numbered 2,4,6. Hope this helps.

The first cylinder is always the one on the opposite site of the clutch.

Number one cylinder is the back (by the fire wall ) left hand cylinder as you are facing, and looking into the engine compartment from the front of the vehicle. The even numbered cylinders are next to the radiator, and the odd numbered cylinders are next to the firewall.
