Atoms are made up of 3 different particles, called electrons, protons and neutrons.

The electrons are organised in layers, called orbitals. The first level is called the 1s orbital, and contains 2 electrons. The second and third levels are the 2s and 2p orbitals and each contain 2 electrons. The 4th level is the 3s orbital, then the next is 3p etc. Logically, at this point, the next orbital would be the 3d orbital, but this has a higher energy than the 4s, so the 4s fill first, then the 3d, then the pattern continues.
