Any question of breach of patient confidentiality is a serious matter , and dealt with severely. In nurse- patient situations ,sometimes etiquette must fall by the wayside in the face of personal inquiries , examinations or treatments. In that case, you must say to your patient, " Excuse me, but I really must ask,....or , " I really need to...." while reassuring them only people involved in their care will have access to that information or see the written result of a treatment or therapy. When alert patients are rude to staff , the chain of command is used from the aide to the nurse to the Head nurse, to the shift Supervisor , and if necessary to the Doctor or Director of Nursing services.Although patients have a right to refuse any medication or treatment, they do not have the right to be personally abusive to staff. In an emergency , etiquette must necessarily take a back seat to urgent or life-threatening situations.
