Yes they are alike in many ways. First of all, lions and tigers are both felines. They are carnivores. They are about the same size. They give birth live young. They have the same weapons, and so much more.

The two cats are very similar, as stated above. The major differences are, besides color and the lion's mane, tigers are usually heavier, and longer. Lions stand somewhat taller at the shoulder. Lions are bolder, inhabiting more open country. Tigers seem to be more intelligent, as lone hunters, they do not have the backing of the pride as lions do, and must rely on their own cunning. In conflicts betwen the two, which can only happen in captivity, the lion usually will make the tiger back down, because tigers, being the lone hunters they are, know that an injury could mean death. However, if pressed, the larger subspecies of tiger, Bengals and Siberians, are more than a match for any lion.

They are the two largest cats, and have similar body structure. Their teeth and claws are similar in shape, the tiger's being somewhat larger, and both animals can bring down prey larger than themselves. Lions live in groups, and tigers are normally loners. The average lion is a little taller at the shoulder, while tigers are heavier and have longer, more musculer bodies.

They're both big members of the feline family, they both dominate the areas they live in, and they can breed together in captivity, showing that they're close together biologically.
