There is a small problem to can know how big a lion can be because there are lots of subspecies in Africa and there is another subspecie in Asia called Panthera Leo Persica (Gir Forest, India).

Anyway, the most of African lions are very large when they are healthy and fully grown. In short...:

Panthera Leo Krugeri (also known as South African or Transvaal lion) is the largest according to records although very close to Panthera Leo Massaicus (Serengetti P., Kenya) and there are two more very large subspecies of African lion (Panthera Leo Nubica -Tsavo lions, Norongoro lions, etc. they are known as East African lions as well- and Panthera Leo Senegalensis). They all are awesome, specially for people who watch them live for first time.

All these subspecies are the 90% of lions in Africa and 80% of lions in the world more or less. They usually weighs up to 260 kg (230 kg on average) for males, up to 180 kg for females. There are very exceptional cases reaching still more weight. Related to sizes it would be nearly endless to explain.

In addition to that, there are several medium-sized subspecies and even smaller subspecies of African lion, but they are minority in proportion (for example, Panthera Leo Azandica who lives at Congo).
