It is three persons in one god, or if you have an easier time thinking of it this way, three aspects. You're not going to have all of the same personality quirks when you're dealing with your mother and when you're talking to a used car salesman who is trying to take you for a few thousand bucks. Same deal.

Another Answer:

First, not all in Christianity believe in a 'trinity' concept. Second, one must consider the limitations of the Hebrew language as compared to other languages like Greek or English which is much more exact in terminology. This is the problem with the Hebrew term 'echad' which has multiple meanings like 'one' in the famous 'Shema' of Deuteronomy 6:4. This term could also mean 'one and the same' like our 'together or unity; it could mean 'first' like in a sequence of importance; or it could mean 'alone' as in there is no other kind but the God kind.

But the beauty of this word in translation - 'The LORD our God, the LORD is first, or The LORD is our God, the LORD alone, or Th LORD our God, the LORD is one (unity)- without limits' - none of these limits God to a single being.

It is always best to allow the Bible to interpret itself and the 'Elohim' or 'majestic plural form of God in Genesis 1 is defined for us in John 1 as the Father and the Word who became the Son. Currently two divine beings but the promise of Scripture is that there will be billions of sons and daughters in the future God Family.

Additionally:

The bottom line is, that with literally hundreds of modern day professing Christian denominations in the world today; the vast majority of whom have never read or studied The Bible -- they can't truly be thought of as being together [as one] in their wide range of beliefs or claims regarding the True God revealed in the Bible.

How are the three religions different from each other?

Christianity revolves around the belief that Jesus is God's son and the Messiah. Their religious text is the Bible. The Jews believe that the Messiah has not yet come and follow the Torah, a religious text. Muslims believe in the teachings of Mohamed and their religious text is the Koran. They also claim to believe in the same deity as Christians and Jews, but the two often dispute this.

Is there any proof that Christianity is true?

No. There is absolutely no proof Christianity is true. You can check the geology records, the fossil records, and the history books; there is absolutely no proof. Most people try to refute this claim by saying read the bible. But, it turns out that only 1 in 10 Christains actually have read the bible. And still, they believe reading the bible will automatically turn people into Christains. When actually, a good portion of the people who have read it turn AWAY from Christianity.

What is the benefit of monotheism?

A:A monotheistic religion is one in which there is only one god. There is nothing inherently superior in monotheism, compared to polytheism, the worship of more than one god. However, after the Babylonian Exile, the Jews began to differentiate their religion from those of their neighbours, on the grounds of being monotheistic. Followers of Judaism, and later the followers of Christianity and Islam, accepted without question that monotheism was in some way superior. In any case their God was the only god, an easier claim to communicate. Christianity faced a minor problem in this scenario. Jesus could not be a God if Christianity was monotheistic, but if Christianity chose not to claim monotheism, then a key point of differentiation was lost. By the third century, the concept of the Holy Trinity was being put forward. This resolved the issue, as there was no longer any question that there was only one God, who was three persons in one.A further problem was identified later, especially in the western Church, in the veneration of saints, which some condemned as tantamount to polytheism. This required the Church to place limits on veneration of saints and to formally define veneration of saints as unlike the worship of gods. Prayers to saints were henceforth supposed to be prayers for intercession, not for the saint to provide independent help for the supplicant. Protestants now condemn prayers to saints and say that only God or Jesus should receive prayers.

Why did Thomas Jefferson wrote that Paul was the 'first corrupter of the doctrines of Jesus'?

The reason is this: Thomas Jefferson was a Unitarian; he did not believe in trinity and the divinity of Jesus. Instead, Jefferson saw Jesus as a great teacher and a man of righteousness (look at: The Life of Jesus by Thomas Jefferson). He also believed that Jesus never claim that he is the son of God, nor his first followers. Paul, in the other hand, invented all the idea of trinity, resurrection, salvation etc... In other words, he founded what become known as "Pauline Christianity", which had become the dominant group of Christendom for a long time. Jefferson believed that the doctrines of Pauline Christianity contradict with the doctrines of Jesus himself. Thus, Paul was the "first corrupter of the doctrines of Jesus".
