It is, in a way, similar to Christianity. One God, but with different aspects.
Think about it this way:
You
You may also be a student, a parent, a friend, a partner, a dancer, a sports-person, and much more, but you are still you.
THE HINDU BELIEF IN ONE AND MANY DIFFERENT GODS AT THE SAME TIMEIn Hinduism there are seven basic gods.
THE SEVEN BASIC HINDU GODS
They are,
1. Indra - god of dreaming
2. Shakti - god of illusion
3. Brahma - god of creativity
4. Vishnu - god of stabilization of life
5. Shiva - god of determination
6. Shani - god of status increase
7. Yama - god of compulsion
The seven gods combined together form the supreme Hindu god Brahman.
The seven gods, or parts of the force they represent, can be combined in various permutations and combinations to form infinite Hindu gods to suit each occupation, geographical location or other needs of life.
Thus, a Hindu either
1. Surrenders to the supreme Hindu god Brahman
2. Believes in any of the infinite gods which constitute a part of Brahman.
For the same reason as Jesus and Mary to Christians
The answer will be based on your view point. For example, Christians believe that God was always there. The same applies to Muslims and Jews, Hindus and Buddhists. If you are religious, it is likely that you believe that God (or gods) have always been. If not, as many people believe, there is no spiritual realm.

It is generally believed that god helps us in our worships. In fact, god listens to the intentions behind our prayers and helps up. The same is true for Hindus also.
Baha'is believe in the same Creator God worshipped by the Hindus, Buddhists, Zoroastrians, Jews, Christians and Muslims.
Mulsims believe there is one god(the same god of christianity and judaism) the creation story is the same one as in christianity and judaism. Hindus believe that there is one existence called brahma who manifests as the hindu gods and the universe itself. Once you know what islam actually is you wouldn't confuse it with hinduism.
