Well, since you explicit used the word properly, I would strongly suggest taking voice lessons. Singing involves great control over body functions, including muscles and breathing. It is wise to be well-tutored, especially when young of age.
Misguided or careless apply of voice load can (and will) lead to damage on the vocal cords.

If signing up for choir counts as singing lessons look up on the internet how to sing form your diaphragm or look for it on YouTube. You should put your hand over your stomach and if you are feeling movement you are singing from your diaphragm, if not keep on trying, it took me awhile to learn. Hope this helps you.

The short answer: You cant...very much. The long answer: You can improve your voice a bit on your own to a certain extent, but not nearly the results you would see by studying with a teacher or at least by having a good set of technique exercises. Also, when your voice gets into trouble, you won't know how to fix it and it won't last for as many years as it would with good technique.

She didn't before BGT. I thought she was better before she had lessons from the BGT singing teacher Yvie Burnette she sounded different and younger. But then she had lessons for a year from a teacher when she was 12 (i dont know any info about this teacher). When she turned 13 she no longer took lessons and now she is self taught. I think without lessons Hollie is better because it is her natural voice.
