How can I explain to my loving and respectful parents why the fact that we are close is very intimidating to my friends?

what do you mean by 'close'? As in distance or relation?
I'm in college, thousands of miles away. We are emotionally very close. We don't talk too often, because they wait for me to call them. We've always been really tight, though, and we have a lot of fun. They're hysterical.

Explain how restrictions that can be placed on accounts on MSN or FaceBook can make it much safer. Allow them to view your accounts so they can see themselves that no one is contacting you that you do not know. Let your parents know your friends so they don't see anyone they don't recognize on your friends lists. ONLY accept people that you KNOW in REAL LIFE as friends, and make sure your settings make it so only your friends can view information about you or message you. As long as you can be respectful to your parents, and listen to their point of view as well as expressing your own, you should be just fine.
