I would first recommend going to a local Singer or Bernina vendor so that you can see the machines in person. Some of these vendors even let you do small work there so you can feel how the machine works. The internet sometimes has better prices, but when getting a complicated peice of equipement like this I would be willing to spend more for the customer service and help you can get from a local vendor.

Where can I find embroidery machines for sale?

I would highly recommend searching ebay or craigslist. If you would rather purchase from a store check a sewing/vaccum store in your area. They often carry many new or used products. If they don't carry it chances are they have a good idea where you can get it. Lastly, call sewing circles or quilting clubs. Sometimes inner circles such as these have the best scoop for where you can get a good deal on embroidery machines.
