In Loving v. Virginia, the US Supreme Court found that state laws prohibiting interracial marriages were unconstitutional because they had no legitimate purpose and denied equal protection of the law to a class of persons based upon discriminatory reasons.

The same can be said of laws prohibiting same-sex marriage.
