Books can help distract you from your problems by showing you a different world or a different life or different problems. They allow us to escape into that alternate perspective/reality, and even to deal with the same issues/emotions that we are faced with, but in an easier way, because it is usually more distant and tolerable when it is happening to someone else.

There are also self-help books about how to deal with stress or other issues as well, if you want a more direct approach.
