Yes it can because, it may have been used before and then cleared but could still contain the virus that might crash the computer.. However, if it is brand new and has never been used before then no it can't crash a computer.
Black boxes are used in aircrafts so that in the event of crash and disater they could know why the plane crashed and the reasons behind the crash. The aviation board could know whether it was due to the pilot or plane malfunctions. This helps in improving aircrafts with safety features.
