The best way to gain respect is to respect yourself, like one lights the inside of a lantern so that its light casts outward. Your demeanor is directly linked to your thoughts, and any negative thoughts will display themselves in how you speak, the way you move, the way your eyes look.

The best way to lose respect is to do something that displays your lack of respect for yourself or for another person. Like a body, respect is something that you are born with and can only be taken away from you by yourself. People lose respect by pretending to be someone they are not, by attempting to gain something without being open about their intentions, a number of ways- but they all lead back to how you display the respect that you hold for yourself and those around you, and the reasons that I have mentioned are actually ways of getting respect in an underhanded manner.
