A friend of mine had a rescue cat some years ago. She already had two dogs when she adopted the cat, and the cat was too old and stubborn to be "trained" to use the flap.
Because the flap had been installed for her dogs, however, she taught the dogs to open the flap for the cat! The cat would find one of the dogs and meaow at it, and the dog would follow the cat to the flap and open it! When the dogs were outside and the cat inside, the cat would be forced to open the flap in order to find one of the dogs... The cat learned how to open the flap one way or another, and eventually realised it didnt need the dogs (so it sat on the garden fence and wound them up instead!)
