A person can claim a deduction for a car donated to charity depending on whether the car was auctioned off or given to a needy person. If the car was auctioned, the deduction can only be the amount the car was auctioned for. If the car was given to a needy person for no cost, you can claim a deduction for the fair market value of the car.

Most charities that look for donated cars do not donate them to people in need; they instead sell the car (or sell the parts of the car) and use the money for their charity. Check with area churches and Goodwill, they may have a program or may know of a specific person willing to donate their car, or at least sell it at a low price!
The donated cars are sold for auctions or are given away to people who are in need of a car.
