If you tell me the engine size, Then I'll tell you were it is.
You need to write your VIN# down and call a Chevy dealer and ask for parts. Then tell the parts man that you have the VIN# and you would like to know the gear ratio in your truck. He'll tell you what gear your truck came factory with.
The numbers on the drivers side rear of the engine right above the bellhousing are more helpful.
u can listen to the engine
JUST TAKE THE VIN NUMBER IN TO THE PARTS STORE. AND THE WILL HELP YOU GET WHAT YOU NEED , MOST OF THE TIME BUT IF THEY CANT HELP GO TO A CHEVY DEALER AND THEY CAN TELL YOU THE INFO
All you need to do is call a Chevy dealer and give them the VIN# and asked them what the gear ratio is in your truck and they will tell you what the factory gear ratio is.

If your truck is a 1/2 ton then you need a 96 or 97 4L60E transmission. If it is a 3/4 ton then you need a 96 or 97 4L80E transmission. These are the ONLY 2 years that will work in you 97 model. You also need to tell them if it is a 4-wheel drive are not. Tell them the engine size too. That should take care of it.
It will be a 4L60E if it's an automatic.
