Ultimately, it is up to God, Himself, to guide a person to faith. The first thing one must do is to pray to God and ask that He guides the twelve year old. The second is that his parents should set a good example through their behavior. Obey God yourself and God will be pleased with you and, perhaps, guide your child as well. The third is that the parent must avoid all forms of income which is forbidden. Making money through gambling, the selling of alchohol, or usury (interest) will cause the child to be misguided. You may not see a connection, but there is one.
Then there is science. All of nature is a sign that God is. The more a child learns about creation, the more likely that child will listen to the voice within which says : "God".
Do not condescend - do not reproach. Let the twelve year old go through whatever process he needs to go through. Give him love, be patient and pray.
Do not listen to the other people! Ask God for his forgiveness and he will help you to be a better person then before!
