There is an app for that. The Kobo reader is the Borders eReader but any (or all) eReader apps will read standard format eBooks (See links below). To add to the iPad using iTunes and Stanza app as an example. Connect the iPad to the computer. Select it under devices in the left hand section of the iTunes software. Select the App tab at the top of the right hand section. Select the Stanza app and drag the available books onto the app's name to add then to the iPad's library. The Calibre software can be used to manage eBooks and convert them between various formats if required.
Just hook it up to iTunes, go to the Sync menu and uncheck the "Purchased on iPad" box. then sync. That gets rid of the songs that you downloaded from itunes using your iPad. I assume that's what you meant.
You can email out a PDF book to any computer, but you cannot transfer books you purchased on the iBook store to the Mac.
