Yes I was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder, then the meds they put me on didn't work so I did some research and found my symptoms were a match for a hormonal imbalance. I took this research to my doctor, and he ran tests, and I was right! It was a hormonal imbalance. I am currently being treated for this instead of bipolar. Its very easy for doctors to make this mistake, as the symptoms of each are very similar.

Quite, unfortunately.

Can a cat scan show bipolar?

No, there is no physical means of detecting or confirming bipolar. It can only be diagnosed from symptoms. It is easily misdiagnosed as something else.

What if someone is misdiagnosed with Bipolar disorder- are there negative effects of a non bipolar person taking bipolar medications?

That all depends on the medication. Different medicines used to treat bipolar are often used for many other purposes. Tegretol, for example, is sometimes prescribed for bipolar but is also used to treat certain kinds of headaches. Seroquel, as another popular example, is often used for sleep or for depression.

Can someone suddenly become bipolar?

no, if you have bipolar you were born with it. The symptoms usually start to show when major stressors or triggers arise during a lifetime. Mostly in the teenage years.

When is the average age of onset for bipolar symptoms?

the average age of onset bipolar symptoms is 21 years of age. These signs may be dismissed as "growing pains" or normal teenage behavior. On occasion, some people have their first symptoms during childhood, but the condition can often be misdiagnosed at this age and improperly labeled as a behavioral problem.

I think I was misdiagnosed depressed when bipolar and think Prozac is making my mood swings worse?

Talk with your psychiatrist. Or find a new one if you have to. Bipolar disorder wrecks havoc on a persons life, as you know, and you deserve to feel better. Fully treated bipolar disorder becomes a tamer beast, and will allow you some peace. Keep speaking up until someone listens, because you deserve to feel stable again.

Why is chronic CO poisoning often misdiagnosed?

What are the effects of Depakote on a person misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder?

Well, for starters..if you feel like you were misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder then you really need to talk to your dr. Depakote is a very strong medication, and if you don't need it then you shouldn't take it. That's like someone taking medicine for high blood pressure when they don't even have hypertension. Depakote is used for many things like migraines, bipolar disorder, and to control seizures in people with epilepsy. I have taken Depakote since I was 15 and am now 25 and never had any "severe" side effects. I did have some sensitivity to sunlight in the beginning and some drowsiness, but those symptoms passed once the medicine got in my system and my levels were where they were supposed to be. You really should talk to your dr though and just explain to him/her that you feel like you were misdiagnosed. Hope this helps some:) (heres a new person writing in:) Also, you could have a lesion in the right temporal lobe have you ever had any neurologist test you for epilepsy, this is another disorder for which depakote is prescribed.. Often behavioral symptoms coming from righ temp lobe are misdiagnosed as stemming from manic depression and then one can be prescribed lithium which wont work--but Depakote does. Tgretol also may work, but its best to stick with what you know --and where the side effects are bearable-- rather than try a new med and risk bad discomfort. I have been thru all this. Symptoms from lef temporal lobe can be misdiagnosed as schizophrenia. Yerachmiel

How common is a misdiagnosis of bipolar - as in diagnosed as being bipolar but not actually?

I think MOST people are misdiagnosed as NOT being bipolar. My wife is bipolar, as is her dad. I've witnessed so many levels that she has been on, that I can see just how easy it is for someone to be misdiagnosed as simply depressed or even disregarded as having "other" issues. Bipolar has many levels. At what level it is finally discovered (like Brittany Spears) can take years, as was the case with my wife. 10 years of odd behavior before she finally went off the deep end and ended up in jail. Don't wait. It will cost you more, personally and financially. Most people that suffer from bipolar refuse to admit they have to deal with it. This is what makes it so hard. You can't put your finger on it, until it is too late because once they are into an "episode", they are gone. And even then, as in our case, police officers can't tell that something is wrong. When my wife cleaned out our bank account and drove across the country wanting to "escape", there was nothing I could do even with an "all points bulletin" and her past record of being treated for this disorder. If you want help, go to Truehope.com. They helped my wife and they can help you even if you aren't "quite" bipolar. As a chemical imbalance, there is treatment that won't leave you feeling "crazy". Good luck and God Bless.

Can bipolar disorder be misdiagnosed when drug abuse is involved?

I would think so. alcohol erases a lot of what defines a person. he or she can change in an instant, and if moodyness is involved with this, which it most likely will when handeling a drunk, one may assume he has bilolar disorder. It may be that he or she has ipolar disorder though; you never know.
