The onion is a popular metaphor to explain psychology. It goes by the thought of line, that men, like onions, have layers. They will let other people closer to the core or they will keep different numbers of layers between themselves and others, depending on how much they like and trust them. If they let you only close to the outside layers, they will typically appear strong (at least mentally) and self-confident. The closer you get to the core the more they will show you they are actually soft and vulnerable deep inside, that's why only the most trusted people get there.
