The medulla, at the top of the signal cord, controls nerves that are in charge of certain muscles and glands. The medulla keeps your heart beating, your lungs taking in air and your stomach digesting food.

The billions of nerve cells in the body form a huge network that leads to the spine. Along the way, nerves from different parts of the body come together in thick bundles. A thick cable of nerves runs up the hollow of the spine to brain. One set of the nerves in the cable carries messages from senses to brain. Another set carries messages from the brain to the muscles and glands. The brain sorts out the signals and makes the right connections. Well the nervous system is very complex. What it does is when you touch an object, this feeling goes through nerves and chemicals. Once it passes those and gets to the spinal cord, it goes all the way up to the brain and tells it what your feeling. Nerve signals do this VERY VERY fast. That's how the main signals get to your brain. But there are other signals to. Like reflex signals. These don't go to your brain. So if you were to touch something really hot, the nerve signals go to your spinal cord, and the spinal cord sends a message to the muscles in your hand and arm to pull away, and your brain doesn't even know what's happening until that signal is finally done telling your muscles to pull away. Your body does this so fast, you can't even count it.

The nervous system is possibly the most complex system in an animals body, nor is it fully understood. Signals are transmitted, via neurons, by bio-electricity to the best of our knowledge.
