Best Answer

Three things. (1) bacteria, (2) sugar, and (3) location. Bacteria consume the sugar and secrete acids that cause decay on the tooth. There needs to be a location on a tooth that is favorable for this to happen. The two most common sites are just below where teeth contact each other (which is primarily why it is important to floss) and on top of teeth that have grooves. If you can limit your sugar intake, no pop or candy you can increase your chances of developing a lot of cavities in your teeth.

Plaque. Plaque builds up after you eat and if you do not brush well and floss plaque can form into cavities.

Are cavities on your 4 year old child grounds for filing a negligence case against his custodial parent?

No. It's not at all uncommon for children to develop cavities, and it certainly isn't necessarily a sign of "neglect". If the cavities remain untreated that's a different story, but courts generally hold that both parents are responsible for a child's welfare; if you noticed cavities and didn't do anything about them either, then you're equally negligent in the eyes of the law.
