How can chickens exercise?

Chickens have been domesticated and are pretty useless at protecting themselves from most predators now. The jungle fowl from which they were originally domesticated could fly quite well. This allowed them to evade many predators. Modern domestic chickens can't fly though.

Observe a chicken coop when the hens are first released in the morning.

The hens fly from their roosts. It is a mad scramble to be the first out the door and check out breakfast. Once everyone has pushed and jostled around getting some food the day is begun. A few flapped wings,and a run to the garden gets them prime territory and started on a daily hunt for insects. No arms or hands means all edible treasures must be sought with claws and leg motions. Back kicks, side swipes are all exercise and these motions are practiced all day in hopes a worm or cricket will be revealed. Chases happen constantly, running from rooster, tractor,dogs and that nasty little farm kid take loads of energy. There is little rest available in the daily life of a chicken, even the daily dust bath means shuffling and wing flapping to get settled just right and then almost for sure, some other hen wants the same spot so the fighting begins.

That's how chickens stay in shape.

Let them free range. They will search for food and play all day. They do not need much space, any backyard will do. They also go back into the coop all by themselves when it gets dark.
