Usually by progressing through normal developmental stages. Egocentricity is probably strongest around age 5, and it takes many years of development before a person consistently displays the ability and inclincation to think from the perspective of someone else. Interestingly, when children lie, particularly after the age of about 6, it is an indication that they are considering what other people are thinking and feeling and deciding how to best respond (usually to keep themselves out of trouble by trying to figure out what others want to hear and telling them that). Only later do those lies begin to take the form of trying to actually protect another person's ego (white lies of the....."yes, that outfit looks great on you"..variety). It is still some time yet, before they can really consider the best interests of another person or to think abstractly enough to consider the long term social consequences of self-centeredness or dishonesty.

How far away can your ex-wife move if you have joint custody but the children live with her?

Since you have joint custody you would have to go to court if she chose to even move to another town several hundred miles away and if she decided to move to another State or country, she would need your permission. Going to court provides equal opportunity for you and your ex to share the children and to come to a decent compromise. Marcy
