Why did the myth of dragons originate?

Dragons symbolize many things to different cultures - like peace, war, harmony, ect.

Dragons also seem to be symbolic of the combination of several elements (air, water, earth, fire, etc.), and seem to be the apparent guardians of nature. In western culture they were subdued (slain), and in eastern cultures they were respected and known for their acts of kindness.

Knowledge of mythical creatures was pasted down through stories as people couldn't write so stories would change and become more far fetched as time went on, but the dragon is very similar in china and Europe which is interesting. My opinion is that people could have found dinosaur fossils and imagined that they were dragons. Think of what a dragon is, a big monster, big teeth, claws etc. that's a dinosaur. There is a theory that the cyclops myth came from when prehistoric elephant skulls were found in southern Europe and people made up a creature that it could have belonged to so the same could apply to dinosaurs and dragons.

Dragons are so facinating because no one can say they are real,but according to history ancient cultures made pictures of dragons.Most of these pictures have dragons with wings.But all of these cultures had no way of comunicating.Which makes it so puzzling because all of these people who wave no way of comunicating still they knew what a dragon is.Therefore you cannot say they are not real.This is what makes them so fascinating,dragons are recorded scince 3,500b.c and all the way up to the middle ages.It is ownly until now we can say they are real because scientists found a dragon perfectly preserved in ice inside an icy cave. but before that,which was ownly recently we could not say whether they where real or not.

It is widely believed that Dragons, along with many mythical creatures such as Cyclops and Giants, were fanciful creations by people in ancient times who had discovered the remains of dinosaurs. Having no real knowledge of the things that had come to pass before their own time combined with the Human imagination has spawned Dragons and the like.

maybe... well, i don't know why, but i have an idea where. they actually have many sources. for example, ancient hiroglyphs have pictures and inscriptions of dragons. but i dont think anyone knows for sure exactly why and where the very first dragon myth originated from.
