Hydro-electricity can help slow global warming , if we stop using fossil fueled energy, which releases carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere. Hydro-electric energy needs rivers and mountains, usually, and some places successfully get most of their energy this way. Wave and tidal power can also be harnessed and small projects are in existence around the world hoping for success.
The nice thing about hydroelectric power is that it doesn't *increase* global warming. It doesn't decrease it as such, although it does reduce the problem.
Hydroelectric power involves converting potential energy or kinetic energy in water into electrical energy, and has no significant by products.
Power from fossil fuels (oil products, gas and coal) involves liberating chemical energy from the fuel. Unfortunately this produces carbon dioxide as a by product. Carbon dioxide has a greenhouse-like effect in the atmosphere, trapping heat radiated from the surface of the planet, increasing global warming.
This latter argument also applies to other carboniferous fuels we burn, such as trees. At least with trees, they remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while they are alive, so we can grow new trees to compensate.
The trouble with fossil fuels is that their carbon is released once and forever. Ironically, they were once living things too (trees and small creatures).
