You would have to create a new partition on your hard drive, or install on a different drive. Be aware that you may have driver problems with 2000, and that it is no longer fully-supported by Microsoft. Finally, why bother? They both use the NT kernel, and are more or less equivalent beneath the surface.

you must reformat the drive XP is on-Then install 2000 as a new OS. Because it is a downgrade-not reformatting the drive will cause XP to not allow the downgrade.
Best way is to copy off the files you want, then format the drive and install WIndows 2000 from scratch. It always works far better that way than to try to do an Upgrade from one OS to another.

Just make sure you are installing a version that is designed for your Operating System (OS). i.e. Windows 7, Windows Millennium, Windows 2000, etc.
