To advance in level with your Spirit, you must Summon its corresponding card in a Duel (it cannot be Set). You do not have to do anything with it. You only have to bring it out face-up on the field once to gain Level Points. Note that bringing out more than one copy of the card will not change the amount of points you gain for your Spirit.

A Spirit may only gain up to three Levels. Each Level that it advances in, it will give you another copy of the card it represents (you obtain the first copy when you get it as a Spirit). Also note that there is no other way for you to obtain the cards within the game without the use of a cheating device such as Action Replay. They are not available in any booster pack. You can, however, enter the passcode for the card once you get the first copy.
